Freelance writers must become good web content editors.
The Problem With Editing Your Work as You Write
The only thing you want to be thinking about during the writing process
is the effectiveness of the article. If you try to edit as you go,
you will slow down your thought process and it will actually affect
the quality of your article.
The Problem with Editing Immediately After You've Written the Article
Remember, you just wrote the article. If you are going to view the article
objectively, you must give it time to cool off. Take a walk in the
yard or around the block. The important thing is to do something
else so you can come back later and properly edit your work. If you
edit immediately, there is a greater chance of missing obvious
mistakes.
Things to Look for While Editing
The obvious things are misspelled words and grammar, right? There are
other elements of your article that require just as much
attention. The following is a checklist for editing your blog
article:
- Check for misspelled words or words used incorrectly (affect or effect).
- Check for proper use of grammar (plural nouns=plural verbs)
- Have you written in the same point of view (first-second-third person)
- Are sentences and paragraphs short and to the point? (Don't use 10 words if you can say it in 6.)
- Is the article an easy read?
- Is the article scanable?
- Can the average person digest what you said?
- Does the information inform, educate, or entertain?
- Can the average person actually learn something from the article?
- Is the article properly optimized for search engines?
- Is the title of the article eye-catching?
- Is your introduction (first paragraph) good enough to convince someone to read the article?
- Is your conclusion adequate?
- Have you included an appropriate call-to-action?
- Have you properly cited sources that reinforce your article?
- Are the research sources used in the article reliable?
